As I See It…They stand there, naked and gnarly against the winter sky. When the wind blows, they move in a swaying cadence, but generally do not break. They are the stalwart sentinels that poke against the winter sky, refusing to move until the spring warmth allows them to push out bits of green against the background of frisky clouds and an azure horizon. They are the deciduous members of our forests. They have grown tall where God has planted them. Their bark protects against freezing cold and covers the capillary conduits that allow life in the form of sap to move up and down their massive bodies. They wait to produce full, green and vibrant leaves. They long to push out multitudes of these chlorophyll factories which provide life recorded in another woody ring which helps to mark their age. When their leaves break out full, oxygen will again be omitted as a fresh atmosphere for spring and summer. Their constancy is a temporal reminder of God’s faithfulness. As His mercies are new every morning, so these creative and massive straws of timber are in the same place, each day, welcoming me and my visual perusal. No, none have moved! They, like their Maker, haven’t slumbered or slept. They simply passed the night hours guarding the forest floor while housing many of its forest critters. My thoughts are that they love to look out for me and my family as well. I’m tempted to say, “Thank you.” I love their majesty! Is there anything else in creation that surpasses the visual and physical reminder of God’s creative hand like these trees? Steadfast, stable, unyielding, productive, creatively variant in size and shape, all of that and more are these grand members of wooded terrain. Oh, I will probably grumble again next Fall when it’s time to rearrange their faded fallen foliage, but it’s a small price to pay. Even the psalmist waxed eloquent about the state of trees: Psalm 96: Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice. Let the sea roar, and all it contains; Let the field exult, and all that is in it. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy before the LORD, for He is coming; for He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in His faithfulness. I love it… singing trees! Pastor Megilligan |
