As I See It…I don’t know about you, but I struggle with things that are enormous in size. It’s hard to wrap your mind around items that are bigger than you are able physically to hug. Our commonwealth is currently adding its participation in a presidential contest that has spent enormously in the process. We are told that not only have multiple millions been spent by each of a certain party’s candidates, but one of them has tens of millions left over and the other owes almost as much as has been spent in this past month (about nine million: that’s 9 with six zeroes after it). But more enormous than that is the figure being suggested among political pundits about the total cost spent by all candidates seeking the office of president of our country over the past year and half (and the six months left to the end) as being one billion (that’s one with nine zeroes after it) dollars. Then need I mention our country’s national budget, some 3 trillion (that’s 3 with 12 zeroes after it) dollars? Now, for a country preacher, that’s a lot of money. Imagine living off the interest of that amount of money or taking a tenth of it and investing it in Christian ministries for the needy…mind boggling isn’t it? There are, of course, other things that are enormous. Consider the distance of our earth to our sun: 93,000,000 miles. We’re three planets out in our rotation around the sun, but consider how relatively easy it is to get a good sun burn on a hot summer days…ninety three million miles away from the source of the heat. And, even though they’re not the tallest of all mountains in the world, the US and Canadian Rockies extend in length through two countries with much of their height being maintained at or above one mile above sea level. A little closer to home, your brain and mine have thousands of neurons that each connects to thousands of other neurons through 10,000 synapses or connecting points. One estimate puts the total synapses at 10 to the 14th power (that’s 10 with 14 zeroes after it). Right now my mind’s synapses are currently on overload thinking about all this. But more enormous than all is our God. He is so “big” that His attributes are limitless in number; His presence fills the universe (which He created); His knowledge is totally comprehensive, that is, there is not one thing that the Lord does not know. It is this same God who calls each of His children by name and knows exactly each need that each of His children has. Enormity does not drown out His personal care for each of us! Casting all your care upon Him, because He cares for you! Pastor Megilligan |
