As I see it…

We are in a giant social conundrum in the United States right now. The reason for the conundrum is the lack of a moral compass in our homes, our schools, our courts, our political system and yes, even in our churches. This past week, our neighboring state’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of recognizing same-sex marriages as being on par with heterosexual marriages and told the state legislature it needed to rectify its statutes accordingly. This is not the first time or the first state to have this happen in our land, but the court’s decision has been ballyhooed as a landmark of sorts. From a Christian perspective this is more than distressing, it puts us on a course with Sodom and Gomorrah. If John Knox thought he and Scotland had trouble with Queen Mary when she married into a “papist” alignment, “we ain’t seen nothin’ yet!” As a nation, we have murdered untold million innocents and then wondered why we have a record number of homicides in our cities. We abandon our children to obtain alcoholic and drug related pleasures and then wonder why a three year old picks up a loaded gun and kills himself with it. We have divorces occurring in over half our marriages (including within the Christian community) and wonder why homosexual rights groups are demanding same-sex marital laws and benefits in our land. We see children neglected by both parents working and being more motivated to obtain a certain standard of living and wonder why delinquency and children-on-children crimes escalate. We watch the evening news with its tale of murders, crime, wars, rumors of wars and out-of-control government spending and wonder why our worldwide society is spiraling out of control as we munch on our take-out dinner. Yes, we have a conundrum, but it should not surprise us either with regard to its timing or its depth. In one sense, we can label the responsible culprit as being universal greed, but that would be too simplistic. We could call it a Muslim extremist vs. Christian thing, but that wouldn’t cover all the bases. We would do well to remember the Pauline injunction (“In the last days difficult times will come. Men will be lovers of self…etc.”), but that prophetic reminder can lead to cynicism if we’re not careful. For children of God, our time is now and our need is a call to prayer. Pray that God would revive Christians enough to love and speak out courageously to those who need God’s biblical/moral standards. Pray that our hearts would be broken so as to yield a deep and abiding revival.
